View Larger I was reading the Wikipedia article for “Somali people” (spoiler alert: all of the arts and literature is very male). It’s all interesting but this kind of stuff ultimately makes great fodder for racists. I am weary of people who invest so much time in analyzing our genetics and talking about us in terms of our supposed Asiatic, European or Arab ancestry so they can ultimately make some failed point about us (usually comparisons to our colonizers). I’m not saying we aren’t “mixed.” I’m just saying that everyone on earth is “mixed.” There’s nothing more “mixed” about Somalis.
I don’t enjoy bits of our perceived non-blackness highlighted to us because that is some divide and conquer shit. Somali people already have a warped sense of selfhood and an inferiority complex that rivals other groups of people with major shadeism issues. Ultimately, this FASCINATION with our genetic makeup oppresses us. The last thing I need is some Halimo citing some study that proves she’s eligible for Israeli citizenship or she’s Arab enough to kick it in Saudi Arabia without being called a fucking slave.
